In fact, Ferrell's last true gem was released more than 5 years ago. Here's a list of things that have happened since The Other Guys came out.
- The Arab Spring began (not crested, began)
- Osama Bin Laden was killed
- B E N G H A Z I
- Neptune completed its first orbit (actually sort of true)
- Nate Dogg died
That all happened so long ago you probably forgot about it. And I'd advise doing the same with Will Ferrell's recent filmography. There are always a few tasty cameos, but his movie quality has stalled drastically. This year, Get Hard was fantastically mediocre. And based off the trails, Daddy's Home will be more of the same.
So he hasn't been part of a good movie for a while, and unless you have a soft spot for sequels, that won't be improving any time soon. But at least those classics we all cherished in the mid 2000s still have their luster, right?
I certainly thought so, until Talladega Nights happened to be on and I decided to tune in. I laughed about 4.5 times. The entire film had become so ingrained in my memory bank that I always knew what was coming, and nothing could surprise me. Sure, crepes are delicious, but how can you continually eat them again and again without anything different sprinkled in between.
And okay, that's just one of several Will Ferrell movies I grew up adoring, and probably the one I've seen the most. So I could just be getting sick of that one. But what if I'm not?
What if somewhere down the line, I don't get happy just listening Ron Burgundy playing jazz flute? What if Allen Gamble's lack of attraction for Eva Mendes suddenly seems more primitively dumb than outrageously funny? What if the meatloaf goes cold?
When a well runs dry, and all that's left is water you've already drunk, well, you know what's going on. Sure, you can get survive drinking, but it's not like you'll choose it when it's among a crowded heap of alternatives.
I definitely don't want to drink Will Ferrell's piss water. But then again...
it can still be pretty delicious when you drink it sip by sip.
